Fuel Pump / Level Sender Removal Tool

The BMW Fuel Pump/Level Sender Removal Tool

After 195,000 miles on my 1995 318i, the fuel pump decided to take a permanent vacation. As a result, we found ourselves back in the shop (our garage) trying to replace the fuel pump. On my 1995 318i (e36 with M42), the fuel pump is located underneath the rear seat behind the passenger side (right side looking from the back of the vehicle). You will also find the fuel level sender unit underneath the rear seat but behind the driver side (left side looking from the back of the vehicle).

Both the fuel pump and fuel level sender unit are secured by a threaded collar ring as shown Figure 1 and 2 below. A picture of the fuel pump is shown in Figure 3 below.

Even though this threaded collar ring may be removed without using a tool, we opted for the safe approach and developed the tool shown in Figure 4 and 5 below. This tool (along with a 1/2 inch drive socket) will allow for easy removal of the threaded collar ring as well as easy

re-tightening to secure the new water pump or fuel level sender unit.
